SAP&DC Announces Grant Awards for the Regional Greenways Mini-Grants Program

Altoona, PA.– The Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission (SAP&DC), with support from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), has awarded $124,500 in grant funding to local communities in the Southern Alleghenies Region. This funding was provided through the Southern Alleghenies Regional Greenways Mini-Grants Program, which aims to provide funding for projects which support implementation of the overall purpose and goals identified in the Southern Alleghenies Greenways and Open Space Network Plan and the Southern Alleghenies Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. This is Round 5 of the Mini-Grants Program offered in the region. Funding for this program was provided by DCNR through the Environmental Stewardship (Growing Greener 1) Fund.

The Mini-Grants Program was open to planning, technical assistance, and development projects located within the Southern Alleghenies Region.  Eligible projects were required to support the goals of the region’s Greenways and Open Space Network Plan, including: conserve important natural resources, expand recreation opportunities, celebrate cultural heritage, bolster economic development, increase pedestrian and bicycle mobility, and promote healthy lifestyles. Any municipality, council of government, conservation district, land trust, non-profit organization, designated heritage area, or redevelopment authority was eligible to submit an application. Applications for proposed projects were received this spring.

Awards were granted to projects within Bedford, Blair, Huntington and Somerset. The selected projects will create additional recreation opportunities in the region, plan for and design community parks, and expand tourist activities and amenities that highlight the region.

The Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission (SAP&DC) along with project representatives and other officials will be presenting checks to the awarded mini-grant projects for the 5th round of the Greenways Mini-Grants Program. The presentations will take place on August 20th and 22nd.  Details can be found below. Check Presentation Ceremonies will be open to the public signifying the awarded funding of the projects listed below:

 

Fort Fetter Community Park Design – $3,000.00

Township of Blair, Blair County:  This grant award will be signified through a check presentation at 8:30 AM on August 20th at the project site: the Fort Fetter Community Park. SAP&DC, Township Chairman, Ed Silvetti and Secretary/ Treasurer, Betty Robertson, plan to attend. For this project, Blair Township will engage a landscape architect to prepare conceptual designs for walking paths among extensive trees and other flora to encourage physical activity, incorporate best management practices into the design and capture and retain on site all storm water from the park.

 

Reservoir Park Basketball Court Renovations - $27,243.45

Tyrone Sports Association, Blair County: A check presentation signifying this grant award will be held on August 20th at 10 AM at the project site: the Basketball Court at Reservoir Park in Tyrone. Members of the Tyrone Sports Association along with the members of Tyrone Borough and SAP&DC will be in attendance. With this funding, the Tyrone Sports Association plans to pave the court, apply protective coating and line striping. Fencing will be replaced and padding for the basketball poles for safety. New Solar lighting will be put in place for safety for night basketball and visitors to the park.

 

Stonerstown Recreation Park Improvement Project - $5,000.00

Liberty Township, Saxton, Bedford County: This check presentation will take place on August 20th at 1:30 PM at the project site: Stonerstown Park in Saxton. Liberty Township staff and Board members and SAP&DC staff will be in attendance. For this project, Liberty Township will be Resurfacing the existing basketball court, benches within the park, bicycle racks, and certified playground mulch.

 

Pennsylvania Avenue Pedestrian Walkway - $39,607.50

Mount Union Borough, Mount Union, Huntington County: This check presentation will take place on August 22nd at 10 AM on Pennsylvania Avenue. Sue Zinoble, Borough Manager, Borough Board members, other county officials and SAP&DC staff will be in attendance. With the grant funds, Mount Union Borough will remove temporary sidewalk, construct sidewalks and concrete curbs on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue.

 

Somerset Lake Nature Trail Park Trail Development Project - $50,000.00

Somerset Lake, Somerset, Somerset County: This check presentation will take place on August 22nd at 1:30 PM at the North Parking lot area at Somerset Lake. Lindsay Pyle, Parks and Trails Director, Somerset County Commissioners., Senator Pat Stefano, Representative Carl Metzgar, Somerset Lake Action Committee members and other county officials and SAP&DC staff will be in attendance. For this project, Somerset County will be constructing a trail which will start from the newly constructed North Parking Lot area, and meander through the woods alongside the lake up until the corner of Wood Duck Road and Gilmour Road.
